Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery is a precise surgical procedure for the removal of skin cancer in which the tissue is examined layer by layer to ensure that all cancer cells are removed.

How does the procedure work?

As part of the surgical procedure, the skin cancer is resected as closely as possible and immediately examined under the microscope. This process is repeated until there are no more detectable cancer cells.

What are the advantages of Mohs surgery?

With this surgical technique, the skin cancer can be removed as close as necessary and the surrounding healthy tissue spared. In addition, a higher healing rate is achieved than with conventional procedures.

How long does the procedure take?

The total duration of the procedure can vary, usually the entire process takes between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the tumor as well as the number of layers required.

While waiting, patients can usually relax or read in a special waiting room.

Is Mohs surgery painful?

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia so that the patient does not feel any pain. Mild pain or discomfort may occur postoperatively.

What are the chances of recovery?

Mohs surgery has one of the highest cure rates for skin cancer, especially for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.

What are the risks?

The risks correspond to a conventional surgical procedure. These include bleeding, infection and scarring. In rare cases, a poor healing process or complications may occur, particularly in patients with certain pre-existing conditions or in immunocompromised individuals.

What does aftercare look like?

Immediately after the operation, precise wound care is explained and check-ups are arranged. Overall, regular follow-up care is important for skin cancer in order to notice new changes at an early stage. The operated site is always clinically examined for possible recurrences.

Can I go home immediately after the procedure?

As a rule, patients are allowed to go home after Mohs surgery unless special aftercare measures are required or the patient shows signs of a complication. It is advisable to be picked up after the procedure so that you can get home safely.
