Skin cancer screening

Skin cancer is a common problem in Switzerland.
A rough distinction is made between two types, white and black skin cancer (melanoma).

Black skin cancer

In relation to the population, Switzerland is the European country with the highest number of melanoma cases.
Melanoma, or black skin cancer, is the most dangerous form of skin cancer because it can metastasize.
Early detection is therefore very important, as it increases the chances of survival for those affected.
Although malignant melanoma is more common in older people, it also affects young people.
This is why skin checks are advisable at any age, especially if there is a family history of skin cancer.

White skin cancer

White skin cancer is common and sometimes particularly insidious.
Contrary to its name, this form of skin cancer can have different colors – from light red to dark brown.
Sometimes white skin cancer only shows itself in the form of a scaly patch, nodular changes in the skin or a wound that does not heal.
White skin cancer is much more common than melanoma, but also less dangerous, as it rarely metastasizes.
There are many causes, but one risk factor is exposure to the sun.
White skin cancer usually develops on areas of skin that are heavily exposed to the sun, such as the nose, forehead, lips, ears or back of the hand.
There are various forms of white skin cancer (non-melanoma skin cancer).
We differentiate between basal cell carcinomas, spinocellular carcinomas, Bowen’s disease and precursors known as actinic keratoses.

Therapy

If a conspicuous skin change is discovered, the dermatologist usually takes a small tissue sample. Depending on the type of skin cancer, an appropriate therapy is recommended. In the case of white skin cancer, these range from superficial therapies using creams, photodynamic light therapy or cryotherapy (icing) to surgical removal. When a melanoma is diagnosed, it is always necessary to surgically remove the skin cancer with a safety margin.

Early detection of skin cancer is important. In this way, effective therapy can be initiated and the quality of life can be significantly improved.

Self-check

Self-check helps with early detection

If skin cancer is detected early, it is almost always curable. This makes it all the more important to be aware of skin changes and have them checked.
